Trusting My Gut: Pivoting My Path for a Creative Summer
Taking a Step Back to Move Forward
Hey everyone!
So, I've got some news. I know I planned to teach a class each month this year, taking only August off for my wedding. But, as it turns out, my gut is telling me to take a little more time for myself this summer. So, I'm hitting pause on my classes for June, July, and August. But don’t worry—I'm not disappearing! I’m just following my instincts, which have never led me astray.
Why the Change?
Running a business as a creative (or in any field, really) means constantly juggling different projects and responsibilities. After four years of working tirelessly to get noticed on various platforms, I've realized that sometimes you need to trust your gut and pivot. It hasn't always been easy, and there have been struggles along the way. Slowly but surely, the ball is starting to turn and move in the right direction.
For years, I’ve found that talking about what’s going on in my life with people helps my brain work things out. Even if they aren’t able to help directly, hearing my thoughts out loud helps me process them better. This summer, I felt a strong need to step back and see my business from a different perspective. It’s about embracing change and trusting that taking a back seat for a bit can help realign where you’re going. It also means more days at the river for me and my family.
The support of my amazing community has been crucial in this journey. The Pigeon Letters Flock has been my go-to group of friends (family, really) and artists who have supported me all along. Peggy Dean, the artist-teacher-coach extraordinaire, has been a true friend and a sounding board for great discussions. I can always count on her for helpful advice.
Additionally, I discovered Human Design a couple of years ago through the incredible Dylan Mierzwinski. Learning that I am a Manifesting Generator with Sacral Authority has only reinforced my trust in my gut reactions. This understanding has been a game-changer, making me more confident in pivoting when necessary.
What's Next?
During these summer months, I'll be focusing on a few exciting things:
Wedding Prep: I want to give myself the time and space to enjoy the lead-up to my wedding without the added pressure of teaching. It's a BIG event, and I want to soak up every moment!
Creating New Patterns: I'll be diving deep into my creative zone, crafting more patterns and designs that I love. It's been a while since I've had the chance to create just for myself, and I'm thrilled to get back to it.
Expanding on Spoonflower: I've recently launched a fun new pattern collection called Modern Floral • Spring/Summer 2024 on Spoonflower. This summer, I'll be working on even more designs and focusing on growing my shop. You can check out my latest collection here.
Website Updates: I'm planning to create a dedicated page on my website to showcase my Spoonflower collections and home decor items. Stay tuned for updates!
Gardening Adventures: I'll be spending more time in my new garden bed, getting my hands dirty in the Earth. There's something incredibly grounding and inspiring about working with plants and watching them grow. Plus, it's a fantastic way to spark new ideas and find fresh perspectives for my art.

A Shoutout to My Support System
I can't talk about this journey without mentioning Peggy Dean and The Pigeon Letters Flock. Peggy has become a true friend and mentor, always offering invaluable advice and support. Her community of artists and friends has been like a family to me, encouraging and uplifting me every step of the way.
Additionally, I owe a huge thank you to Dylan Mierzwinski, who introduced me to Human Design. Dylan’s insights have been instrumental in helping me understand my creative process and life’s path. If you're curious about Human Design, I highly recommend booking a reading with her. You can find her on Instagram at Human Design Time.
Final Thoughts
Switching gears like this might seem a bit unconventional, but I've learned to trust my instincts. They’ve led me to incredible opportunities and personal growth. This summer break is a chance to reconnect with my creativity, prepare for a significant life event, and explore new avenues for my art. Plus, I get to enjoy the simple pleasures of gardening and being close to nature.
